Our Story

Water is one of the most basic necessities of human life, but unfortunately, Thousands still do not have access to safe drinking water. A lack of sanitation and safe drinking water remains one of the biggest threats to life of those living in poverty and under-developed countries.

Water Crisis in Africa

It is a well-known fact that millions of people lack access to clean water in Africa. People travel many hours a day in search of water on Zanzibar Island. But those who have no water on the smaller islands must travel across the sea daily to collect water from government taps on larger islands.Quite often these taps are switched off for several weeks or even months at a time. This leaves people stranded without fresh drinking water. We have been drilling for water for to help support the poor for years now. There are scores of our water wells across Zanzibar’s remote villages and its neighbouring islands.

How much does a water well cost?

A full water tower costs £2,500 and can be dedicated to a loved one. You can also fundraise between family and friends to help share in the reward of the cost of building a water well. You can come and complete the build and open your well in Zanzibar and meet the people who will benefit.

What is so different about our water wells?

Our water wells are no longer hand dug, we dig with hydraulic machines some 60m to 120m deep so the water supply is clean and free of pollutants. They are built to last. We install an electric pump to siphon water from deep below the surface to a 5,000 litre tank. We tap this off for accessibility. We provide a lifeline to the Zanzibar people.

Why Donate Water?

The humanitarian rationale for donating water needs no introduction. There are numerous ahadith on the virtues of giving people water. Among which is a narration by Sa’d ibn ‘Ubada (radi allahu anhu), who said: “Messenger of Allah! Umm Sa`d my mother died, what is the best charity (on her behalf)?” The Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wasalam) replied: “Water.” So Sa’d dug a well and said: “This is for Umm Sa’d.“

Everlasting Benefit

Providing water wells are Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity) for as long as the well supplies water – even after one’s death. We now provide fresh clean drinking water to over 24,000 people on a daily basis. Anas bin Malik reported he heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say:

“ Seven deeds that their reward is still written for a person even after he dies in his grave. Among them is digging a well and his child making dua’a (prayer) for him. ” [Saheeh Al-Targheeeb]
